Moneyfields start their first season in the Southern League, much as we did last season, after promotion from the Wessex League last season. On the last day of the season, Moneyfields clinched the title, ahead of Portland United. However, after having been presented with the trophy, Moneyfields were docked three points for fielding a suspended player earlier in the season. This cost them the title and they were forced to hand back the trophy. Portland United, were crowned champions by default but hadn’t met the criteria for promotion. Although friendlies count for little, eyebrows must be raised by the Moneys’ result away at Havant & Waterloovile, winning by a single goal with goalkeeper Steve Morthorpe named man of the match.
Kempston have had a solid pre-season, winning against Luton Town and running Biggleswade Town close in a tough encounter. Managers Jimmy Stoyles and Gary Flinn have managed to retain the majority of last season’s squad and have added in key areas. With the ambition to go one better than last season and make the promotion places, it will be key to make a good start to the season on the south coast.
As part of the restructuring of Non-League football next summer, the division will have an extra automatic promotion place this season. This means that the play off places will extend down to sixth place instead of 2nd to 5th. Only one club will be relegated this season.
