Last Time They Were Here… This is North Leigh’s first time at Hillgrounds
Did you know… The ground at North Leigh over looks the impressive Eynsham Hall estate, in the grounds of which there is Green Wood Fort, an iron age hill fort.
In the local dialect, the village is pronounced “Nor-Lye”, and is termed ‘North’ to distinguish it from South Leigh, approximately three mile to the south.
In the bar Aston Villa take on Millwall in the lunchtime game and then after the conclusion of our match Brentford face Leeds, both on Sky Sports.
On this day in Rovers history… The earliest recorded result on this date is in 1912 when Rovers hosted a side called Luton Clarence and were beaten by five goals to one.
More recently, in 2017, Histon travelled to Hillgrounds at the end of Rovers’ first Southern League season. Rovers won out four goals to one on the day, thanks to strikes from Ben Shepherd, Ash Fuller and a brace from Jake Newman.
Rovers have an Easter Monday home game for the first time since promotion to the Southern League. In 2016-17 the spring bank holiday fixture took us down the road to Barton, before last season we travelled (a couple of days later thanks to the rain) to St. Ives to face Cambridge City. Easter Monday represents the reverse of the New-Years’ Day fixtures, on the first of January this year, Rovers travelled the two and half hours to Oxfordshire, where North Leigh – then bottom of the table and seemingly cut adrift – won out by three goals to one. Rovers’ goal on the day was quite a special one however, Josh Crawley rocketing the ball into the top corner on the volley from outside the area.
This is the last home game of the season, please join us in our traditional End of Season Awards evening. This is to be held at the club on Saturday May fourth, entry is free and all are welcome.
